So you’re planning a trip to Sicily? Why not indulge in some of the country’s finest literature and most representative cinematic pieces before you go? Here are my recommendations:
The Shape of Water by Andrea Camilleri
The first book in a series by Camilleri, Sicilian detective author. The books feature Inspector Montalbano among many descriptions of local dishes, giving a distinct Sicilian flavour to the series. I particularly enjoy these novels and have even read a short story or two in the same series.
The Leopard by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa
The only book by Tomasi, this historical novel is one of the best-selling Italian books of all time. It chronicles Sicilian society during the 19th century Italian reunification. It was also made into a film.
Mafiosos may be a Sicilian stereotype, but that is no reason to pass up on this classic film, set between New York and Sicily.
A movie about a beautiful woman set during the early 1940s, who is the subject of viscous rumours due to her looks.
